Jakarta, August 26th, 2026 – The Alumni & Career Center of Universitas Bunda Mulia (UBM) proudly organized an HR Gathering themed “Understanding Gen Z in the Workplace: Building Engagement, Performance, Retention.” The event aimed to strengthen relationships between Universitas Bunda Mulia and its industry partners while providing in-depth insights into the challenges faced by HR professionals in managing Generation Z employees, as well as strategies to enhance their engagement, performance, and retention.

The event commenced with a performance by the Biemers Fusion in Dance Community (BIEFINDC), followed by a welcome address delivered by Ms. Shella Hendradjaja, S.I.Kom., Manager of the Alumni & Career Center. The program continued with an interactive talk show moderated by Ms. Nindya Putri Aprodita, S.Psi., M.Psi., Psychologist, Head of the Psychology Study Program at Universitas Bunda Mulia. The session explored in depth how HR professionals can better respond to the ways Generation Z thinks, works, develops, and the factors that influence their decision to remain with an organization.

In the core discussion, the speaker highlighted that differences in Generation Z’s workplace behaviors are influenced by the context in which they have grown up, including their exposure to the digital world, economic and social uncertainty, evolving definitions of success, and growing awareness of mental health. Nevertheless, generational characteristics should not be used as the sole basis for assessing an individual, as personality, experience, values, and organizational context also play significant roles in shaping individual behavior.

The discussion further emphasized the role of managers in translating employee behaviors into underlying needs rather than immediately assigning labels. Several practical approaches were introduced, including conducting brief career development conversations, providing stretch assignments, facilitating access to new experiences and projects, delivering specific feedback, establishing clear expectations, conducting regular check-ins, explaining the purpose and impact of employees’ work, and creating opportunities for employees to share their ideas. The objective is not to create dependency on managers, but rather to gradually foster autonomy, trust, decision-making capabilities, and employee independence.

Therefore, the challenges of managing Generation Z should not be viewed solely as generational issues, but also as opportunities to create a better workplace environment for all employees. By fostering an environment that provides clarity, support, opportunities for growth, meaningful work, a voice in the workplace, and healthy professional relationships, organizations can create a stronger employee experience that ultimately supports engagement, performance, and retention.

Throughout the event, Universitas Bunda Mulia and the Alumni & Career Center also highlighted the continuously evolving collaboration between educational institutions and industry. Such collaboration plays an important role in bridging academic knowledge with the practical needs and challenges of the workplace.

With the successful completion of the HR Gathering, the event is expected to provide HR professionals with a broader perspective on Generation Z—not merely through the lens of generational characteristics, but by understanding their needs, potential, and the workplace environments that enable them to thrive. A deeper understanding of Generation Z is expected to help organizations foster greater employee engagement, optimize performance, and create work environments that encourage employees to grow and remain within the organization.

Ultimately, understanding Generation Z is not simply about learning how to manage one generation, but about creating a workplace environment that is more adaptive, inclusive, and relevant for employees across generations.

Jakarta, 26 Agustus 2026 — Departemen Alumni & Career Center Universitas Bunda Mulia (UBM) dengan bangga menyelenggarakan acara HR Gathering yang bertemakan “Understanding Gen Z in the Workplace : Building Engagement, Performance, Retention”.
